JAY – A VISIONARY AHEAD OF HIS TIME
Late in 1978, Henry and Esther’s elder son, Jay, paid a visit to the new facility in Port Washington. Although he liked what he saw, he wasn’t quite ready to join full time. A lawyer by training, Jay had made his career on Wall Street, where he personally witnessed the dramatic impact of the computer revolution in that industry. He had served as Vice President and General Counsel to computer multimillionairecum-reform politician, H. Ross Perot, at E.I. duPont, Glore Forgan & Co. Jay had also served as Vice President of Legal Affairs with the Commodity Exchange in New York. During his 15 years in the corporate world, he had learned that some of those firms had failed in their efforts to computerize their systems adequately because their teams were not fully engaged in the process. Much of traditional corporate America, he observed, was also riddled with bureaucracy, scandal, greed, prejudice and abuse. He saw himself as a refugee from corporate America and envisioned a business environment where everyone was treated with dignity and respect, with ample opportunity to reach their full potential. In 1980 he felt that the timing was right for him to take charge of Henry Schein and begin to transform the family business into a nationally recognized company serving the healthcare community, one with an infrastructure to carry forward his vision of fairness and dedication to team members and customers. To achieve this vision, he knew he would have to surround himself with the brightest and most committed people who could thrive as a team.
