if the practice used 21 cans of septocaine anesthetic in the last 12 months, do you really need more than 2 cans on hand at any one time? one of the inherent problems in the inventory system of many dental practices today is that there isn’t really a “system” at all. it may simply be a staff member walking through the office during the work week to see what supplies should be reordered. “most customers don’t recognize that there is a cost to having inventory on hand [tying up money],” said ron kralik, henry schein dental’s director of ecommerce marketing. this includes an often unrealized financial cost related to expired products that should have been disposed of months ago or items that were not used because the practice switched to a new or different product for the same purpose. “one of henry schein’s field sales consultants evaluated the inventory of a practice who was not a henry schein customer and found that about $10,000 was being wasted in unused items,” kralik stated. the answer is to keep less in stock but be more ef f icient when ordering necessary supplies. additionally, technology allows dental office manPhoto: Medioimages/Photodisc/Getty Images
