For many out-of-towners, navigating an unfamiliar city brings uneasiness. Don’t fret. To reach center city, it is best to take the Second Street exit from Interstate 83. From the exit, it is a straight shot to downtown’s famous Restaurant Row, retail shops, hotels and entertainment. Along either side of Second Street, travelers will find several parking lots and garages that offer low rates. Most importantly, metered parking is free during the weekends and between 5pm to 8am on weekdays. The City of Harrisburg’s Parking Authority’s Web site (www.harrisburgparking.org ) provides helpful maps and rate information. When traveling from Interstate 81, take the North Front Street exit, which winds its way along the bends and curves of the Susquehanna River. This is considered the “scenic route” to Harrisburg. Follow North Front Street for a couple miles until you reach Market Street. Make a left on Market Street, go two short blocks and you have reached Second Street. Note: Second Street (one-way South) and Front Street (one-way North) are most commonly used to get around the city. Each street will also get you back to the main interstates. A friendly welcome is around every corner. Be sure to visit the Harrisburg Visitors Center located at 22 Second Street for city maps and guides, information, recommendations and a warm smile. Enjoy the scenic Susquehanna River as only a paddler can, by canoe or kayak! Picnic or camp on one of numerous islands. Fish for world-class smallmouth bass. Swim or wade in a secluded cove, and view the abundant waterfowl. Want the experience to last a lifetime? Visit our Retail Shop!
