documentary zeal or his enduring concern to show how the
Victorian theatre building was inseparable from the spirit of
the people who crowded into it. To an age which builds its theatres upon scientific principles and technological gains, Glasstone
offers a chastening recollection of the time when theatres were
built with a healthy admixture of traditional practice and fancy,
theatres built to capture a substantial degree of the unreality of
the event which it was meant to house.
Towards the end Glasstone writes, "The audience, when
surrounded by itself and by decoration, seems to focus its attention on the stage. This apparent paradox, which has nevertheless
been demonstrated time and time again, creates the 'theatrical
atmosphere' which exists in these brilliantly vivacious auditoria."
Or, in other words, Victorian theatrical style is the theatre itself.

This book fills a long-felt need for a text on electronic soundreinforcement systems and is, in the reviewer's opinion, the very
best book on this subject. Don and Carolyn Davis have been
known for some years by the excellent seminars held by their
firm, Synergetic Audio Concepts. Through these seminars, and
through Don's previous work on preparing "clinics" for Altec,
they have been leaders in an ongoing revolution that has brought
a high degree of professionalism into a field formerly dominated
by mere salesmanship. We may even say that a majority of the
better engineers working for sound system contractors today owe
at least part of their education to this team.
The book largely grew out of a need for a text for the SynAud-Con seminars, but it can be read, studied, and reread with
profit, independently of the seminars, by anyone interested in
the field of sound reinforcement. It covers a wide variety of
subjects, from basic sound-system planning to details of installations. Mathematics is used wherever appropriate, but is never too
complex for anyone capable of operating a pocket engineering or
scientific calculator, or even a good engineering slide rule. In
developing formulae, the authors must occasionally simplify,
but they are usually careful to indicate the underlying assump·
tions, and these can help in indicating areas where the formulae
are not applicable or where they must be modified, if not always
how they must be modified.
There are a few areas where this reviewer disagrees, at least in
part, with the authors. Their view of the entire narrowband
equalization concept may be summed up in their statement on
page 141 that, "It has not been demonstrated that it is possible
to either: (1) Raise the acoustic gain by using filters narrower than
1/10 octave; (2) Improve the articulation-Ioss-for-<:onsonants percentage by using filters narrower than 1/10 octave." However, the
reviewer has had experience with one church where use of a few
very-narrow-band filters was necessary to get adequate gain, and
the reviewer suspects there may be a few occasions where articulation-Ioss-for-<:onsonants can be reduced also. These are believed
to be confined to examples where the microphone (and loudspeaker) arrangements remain fixed and the acoustical environment does not change to any measurable degree. The reviewer
would agree with the authors' two statements for the majority
of sound system installations. The reviewer's few other disagreements are similar; even when the Davises are not absolutely correct
for 100% of all situations, they are correct for a good 95%.
The reviewer continues to be delighted with the encyclopedic
nature of the book, with the amount of data presented, and by its
overall practical usefulness in the day-to-day work of designing
sound systems. Some of the material was available to some consultants and contractors from a variety of sources; the convenience of having all this material between two hard covers, along
with much new material, and with all the material available to
anybody, represents a large step upward in the professionalism
to be expected in the sound system field.

Although most of the material in Sound System Engineering
is applicable to systems employed in reinforcement of live sound,
the designers of background music, paging, sound-effects, disco,
and motion-picture playback systems will also find much of
value. The entire field of masking noise systems, particularly use·
ful for open-plan offices, is compressed into a few pages with
the important facts and practices presented very well.
However, don't for a moment think that by buying this book
you have forever solved the question of where to find all information on the field of sound reinforcement. The authors are very
happy to exchange views with graduates of their symposia and
with any sound system professional. They, like all of us, are constantly learning, and they can be expected to produce revised and
expanded editions of the book. Meanwhile, I suggest that you use
the existing book for its excellences, and peruse the extensive
bibliography for papers and books that can further your education
in this important field.

"Show me the fashions of a country and I will write its history," said Anatole France years ago. The present century would
have set him a hard task," So ends Elizabeth Ewing's History of
Twentieth Century Fashion, a book in which the author sets for
herself the hard task of detailing the many diverging aspects of the
fashion revolutions of this century.
The book begins with an outline of the dominant line of
the Edwardian era; goes on to reveal the shadow cast by sweated
labour which provided the impetus for the growth of manufacture
from 1900-1908; studies the effect of the first World War, especially the halcyon fashion picture of the twenties and thirties
between the wars and the stringent fashion by decree characteristic of "Utility Fashions"; explores the famous "New Look" of
1947 which led into the explosion in the fashion world from the
late fifties through the "narcissistic sixties"; and ends by previewing the "design for living" fashions for the seventies.
Although the book has a decidedly British point of view, the
mystique of Paris and the prominence of New York in the fashion
world are discussed through international couture as well as by
reference to independent designers. The far reaching contributions of Chanel, Schiaparelli, Dior, Balenciaga, Lanvin, Molyneux,
and more recently, of Mary Quant, Jean Muir, and Ossie Clark
are well chronicled. In this area, History of Twentieth Cenrury
Fashion gives a strong perspective of who did what and when.
History of Twentieth Century Fashion also explores the
hinterland of the fashion picture by documenting the rise of the
fashion manufacturing industry from the development of stock
sizing to the establishment of the major department stores. The
section on fashion retailing is especially well presented where the
birth of famous brand-name houses, such as Jaegar and Aquascutum, and fashion consortiums, such as Berterex, is traced. The presence of the now ubiquitous boutique and its sister splinter-shop
in department stores (such as Miss Selfridge and Harrods' The Way
In) is also explained.

The influence of production technology on fashion is not
ignored and the effects of new technological advances are sometimes quite startling. Examples include showing how the develop·
ment of rayon and celanese determined the line and cut of fashion
in the twenties as well as speculating on the far-reaching effects
of Laser beams for bulk cutting in the seventies.
Again, although the emphasis is on the British garment industry, History of Twentieth Cenrury Fashion does provide a comprehensive view of developments in the fashion profile of the
twentieth century and the 250 drawings and photographs which
