Czech Theatre in Transition Reflections on Freedom and Time A fter struggling to survive 40 years of government control on every aspect of creative life. the theatre in Eastern Europe is struggling to survive freedom. Even in Czechoslovakia. where the theatre played the lead role in toppling the repressive regime. the theatre must now face crippling financial difficulties. organiza- tional havoc, and the reemergence of old resentments laid to rest either by the forced silence of Communist rule or by the atmosphere of Post-Revolutionary good will.
