COMMENTARY BY Bradford Clark and Greg Robbins PHOTOS BY Bradford Clark andJohn Birk Several costume pieces made of rough homespun fabric hung on bamboo poles, accompanied by a bamboo rake. Dominating the center of the exhibit was a dohyo, the Sumo wrestling ring. In viewing these presentations, it struck me how much the cultural heritage of a designer influences how that designer approaches design. \ iewing the Japanese designs in the context of the dobyo emphasized the different heritage of our two cultures. Yet, as is evident in Salome and others, designers presented with the same challenges within scripts often respond with "universal solutions." 30 F ALL I 9 9 TD&T
