by Jim Trenberth CHILE T he subject of the Chilean exhibit at PQ in tlle Thematic Section "Homage to Scenography'" dealt with the work of Bernardo Trumper. Edith Del Campo, exhibit designer described Trumper in this way: "He included us into his dreams... and in some way, we foUow him in his walking road." The exhibit was a wonderful tribute to an artist and teacher. Trumper, who served as OISTAT general committee vice-president from 1994 to 1997 and president of the Chilean Center of OISTAT from 1987 to 1993, was also a teacher at the School of Theatre Design at the University of Chile. His professional work from 1950-1996 reflects his training at Yale. 1was struck by the quality of renderings that reminded me of Donald Oenslager and Joe Mielziner. His beautiful light renderings for Verdi's Sicilian Vespers (1989) and Nabncco (1995) reflect wonderful craftsmanship and an evocative style. His models and rendering for box sets have the feel of Oenslager and Howard Bay. As a personal discovell' of an artist about whom I knew nothing it was the equivalent to finding Monet for the first time. *:. tbe resident /igbting designer and prodnction manager for Iowa State University Tbeatre.
