** 1995, Frank Hfulig was one of the team of scene designers from the former East Germany including Robert Ebeling, Harmut Meyer, and Peter Shubert, who won the Gold Medal for scene design at the Quadrennial Scenography Exhibition in Prague. Like many scene designers in Europe, he is also a costume designer. On my four-month trek through Central and Eastern Europe to meet and interview the most influential costume designers from eight countries, Hanig was one of the most articulate and passionate designers I was to encounter. We met at his woodland cottage outside of Dresden, where he spends little time now since he works in various cities throughout Germany as weil as in Cyprus. In a visit and conversation that extended to thirteen-hours and at least one bottle of Cypriot wine, I became acquainted with a brilliant and disciplined character whose designs are rooted in precise dramaturgical interpretations which he documents with a camera and in writing from beginning to end. by mARIAnnE CUSlER 42 SPRING I 9 9 9 TZ>&T
