Notch along one of the long corner edges and trim off the corners to make the foam more round (fig. 9). * Stitch the two ends together to form a donut. * Slip all of the hair inside the donut and pull the donut down flush with the wig base (fig. 10). Evenly spread the hair around and over the donut. Use an eight inch circle of 4" black elastic (or other color appropriate to the hair color) to secure the hair in place below the donut, thus forming a bun. Comb the remaining tails of the hair back over the donut and tuck the tails in the middle. Cover the bun with a tight hair net. * Dress the wig with flowers and tassels using a curved needle to stitch in place (figs. 11 and 12). * To add flowers or other decorations around the bun, stitch the desired decorations to another 8˝ circle of black 4˝ elastic and slip it over the bun. This allows for easy maintenance or change of hair ornaments if needed. NOTES: * If you need additional hair to cover thin areas consider using hair from a damaged wig already in stock. * There is an alternative to hand stitching the hair to the wig base at the crown. Using an additional length of weft, roll the weft in on itself to form a 1˝ spiral. Allow the hair to remain straight and loose. Stitch the weft to the crown to form a ponytail. You can then tie your sections to the root with black yarn. The yarn will be covered when you add the donut. * To control the actors' hair under the wigs, traditional pin curls with bobby pins were painful for most actors. French braids or pin curls with flat metal clip barrettes worked best. * Hairspray was not necessary on this style of wig and there were no maintenance needs on the wigs during our three-week rehearsal and run process. They have been used several times since they were struck for the show, and required little to no maintenance before being reused. * It is possible to stretch the wig base to accommodate a larger head either during the construction process, or when reusing the wigs on other actors. * Fosshape is available from Dazian (www.dazian.com) and other theatrical fabric suppliers. ❖ 64 W I N T E R 2 0 0 5 TD & Thttp://www.dazian.com
