I have to say that it was amazing to participate in this project. A lot of people spent a lot of time and effort making Sound Lab 2012 happen. I'm sure that a year ago none of the people involved had a true sense of the scale or scope of the work to come, but we also couldn't imagine just how successful it would turn out to be. The look on faces as people entered the doors and saw the lab, was truly worth all of the effort. Seeing the excitement of the students (and, let's be honest, of the faculty and professionals) working on this amazing collection of equipment made all of the work worthwhile. It was thrilling to watch people sitting in the middle of the Constellation System and not only reveling in the ability to change the perception of the space around them but to imagine how this could change their own spaces or designs. Sound Lab 2012 was a resounding success, and already I am looking forward to 2014 when Sound Lab appears again. In Part II of this series, we will describe in detail the equipment in the 2012 Sound Lab, and talk about some of the sessions, which were held in the room. We will also talk about lessons learned from this inaugural USITT Sound Lab and about some of the things we are beginning to explore for the 2014 lab. v Erik Alberg serves as the Vice-Commissioner for Industry and Manufacturer Relations of the Sound Commission and is the technical director and principal designer for the Hope College Department of Dance. 14 theatre design & technology spring 2012
