Credit Union Times - October 1, 2008 - (Page 24) SCHOLARSHIPS Wauna Federal Credit Union, Clatskanie, Ore., awarded eight $1,000 college scholarships to members who are graduating from school, colleges and universities. The recipients were Mackenzie Carr, Lynnae Huber, Kelsey King, Jonathan Landwher, Charayah Lewis, Dennis Peterson, Jennifer Stephens and Whitney Taylor. Blackhawk Community Credit Union, Janesville, Wis., awarded college scholarships to six area high school seniors. The recipients of $750 presidential scholarships were Brianne Gohlke and Kayla Hanson. The recipients of the $500 scholarships were Derrick Zimmerman, Kaylee Miller, Tess Fiedler and Meghan Marino. Vermont Federal Credit Union, Burlington, Vt., announced the winners of its scholarship awards. Alexander Hango, Anna Houston, Kathryn Laughlin and Nicole Baker were each awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Hango is attending Clarkson University where he plans to become a civil engineer. Houston is attending the University of Vermont where she is studying various subjects including history and English. Laughlin is attending Cornell College to study languages and business to enter the field of international business. Baker is attending Arcadia University and is studying international business and culture. Holy Rosary Credit Union, Rochester, N.H., awarded five $1,000 scholarships to high school graduates. The recipients where Nickolas Funk, Tyler Goodell, Jenna Leigh Marcotte, Timothy Peabody and Stephanie Pelletier. Funk is attending the University of Southern New Hampshire. Goodell is attending Johns Hopkins University. Marcotte is attending the University of Maine. Peabody is attending Bryant University. Pelletier is attending the University of New England. GenFed Federal Credit Union, Akron, Ohio, awarded an $1,000 to three members. Two of the winners won the Carroll Prather Young scholarship, which was established in 1998 and honors William Prather, Homer Carroll and Jack Young. One winner was chosen to received the Wadsworth community scholarship that is available to high school seniors, college students or graduate school students living or working in the Wadsworth community. The two Carroll Prather Young Scholarship winners were Marissa Dubina and Caleb Plumlee. The Wadsworth community scholarship was awarded to Allan Muzilla. Their essays were reviewed by GenFed’s scholarship committee and chosen as the best out of approximately 35 entries. Taleris Credit Union, Cleveland, awarded three $500 scholarships in the first annual Taleris scholarship Awards program. Amy Doubrava, Kevin Cesaratto and Emily Stadyuhar were awarded the scholarships based upon academics, achievements and community service. Educational Community Credit Union, Kalamazoo, Mich., awarded 21 students a total of $23,000 in scholarships. The scholarships were awarded at a ceremony and Educational Community President/CEO Charles Cornelius presided over the ceremony. Nineteen $1,000 scholarships and two $2,000 scholarships were awarded. The $2,000 scholarships were created and named the Robert E. Treloar scholarship and the Donna van Westrienen scholarship in honor of two individuals for their dedicated service on the Educational Community Board of Directors for over 20 years. Peninsula Credit Union, Shelton, Wash., awarded three scholarships to members. Tyler Seth was the recipient of the $1,500 Sel Vander Wegen scholarship and is attending Gonzaga Univeristy. Joel Thomas was the recipient of the $1,500 Sandy Latham community service scholarship and is attending the University of Washington. Chelsey Wheeler is the recipient of the $1,500 Peninsula Credit Union scholarship and is attending Gonzaga University. The scholarship committee is made up of credit union board members. Seventeen of the 21 Educational Community Credit Union scholarship recipients attended an award ceremony event. Omni Community Credit Union, Battle Creek, Mich., awarded five nonrenewable $1,000 educational scholarships to high school graduates. Member recipients were selected based on their grade point average and a 500-word essay on the benefits of belonging to a credit union. The winners were Tedean Hunter, Benjamin Moran, Bradley Phelps, Samantha Sanford and Danielle Shive. South Jersey Federal Credit Union, Deptford, N.J., awarded seven scholarships to South Jersey graduating seniors for the 2008-2009 academic year. Applicants were selected based on essays, academic performance, extracurricular and community activities and teacher references. The recipients were Kevin McClain, Allison Murawski, Courtney Holtaway, Rachel Brown, Stephanie Bayrums, Jico Baligod and Kasey Knoell. Achieva Credit Union, Clearwater, Fla., awarded $15,000 in college scholarships to six finalists of the 2008 Achieva scholarship program. Argenis Burgos, Auna Gould, Madison Honig, Natalie Hyman, Tara Larson and Michelle Reilly received $2,500 in scholarships. Achieva received over 100 applications for the scholarship program. To be considered each student submitted an application, a school transcript, two letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors or school administrators and an essay.
