Cath Lab Digest - February 2008 - (Page 59) FEBRUARY 2008 SICP MEETING UPDATE 59 The Society of Invasive Cardiovascular Professionals (SICP) at Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) 2007 Darren Powell, RCIS, FSICP, Program Director for Invasive Cardiovascular Technology, Spokane Community College, Spokane, WA; SICP education co-chair The SICP RCIS Review at TCT The SICP was delighted to be invited back to the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) 2007 sessions in Washington, D.C. The SICP conducted six hours of RCIS Exam Review Sessions over a two-day period. These mini RCIS review courses were attended by a wonderful and well-versed group of cath lab professionals from all over the U.S., including many from California’s Bay area. Topics included patient care and assessment, cardiovascular disease processes, hemodynamics, cath lab calculations, 12-lead EKG, cardiovascular anatomy and physiology, cardiovascular pharmacology and sample RCIS test questions. The lectures were presented by Todd Chitwood, RCIS, FSICP, Darren Powell, RCIS, FSICP, Jeff Davis, RCIS, FSICP and moderated by Thomas Maloney, RCIS, FSICP. The SICP would like to extend a special acknowledgement and note of appreciation to Tom Maloney. Tom was a course director for the TCT 2007 Nurse and Technologist Symposium and was responsible for bringing the SICP to TCT. He is also a long-time SICP member and has served on the board of directors in various capacities over the years. The TCT Experience The 2007 TCT meeting was most impressive in scope and caliber, with over 10,000 attendees from over 100 countries. It even had its own newspaper each morning showcasing the previous day’s highlights. I am an educator, so I looked at the setup of the main conference room from a process perspective. It was like a multi-track information sensory feast. In the Main Arena were 3 screens with 3 audio channels of simultaneous live presentations to choose from. TCT course directors Gregg Stone and Martin Leon took turns moderating the expert panels. At the side of the room was a broadcast team with dozens of monitors to synchronize the feeds coming in from all over the world. A producer had a microphone link to the ear of the moderator just like on the network news. One task bar on the main screen told you what topic was up next and with a timer countdown. The live cases were presented from nearly 30 sites around the world, including New York, Brazil, Germany, and China for the first session. Headsets were available for the attendees that would let you listen in to audio from one of the 2 other simultaneous tracks of education. Some of the additional tracks were endovascular (including stenting), structural heart (including percutaneous valve deployment and atrial septal defect (ASD), patent foramen ovale (PFO), and ventricular septal defect (VSD) closure devices) and vascular for peripheral topics. 2007 was the 30th anniversary of Dr. Andreas Gruentzig’s first angioplasty of a human coronary artery. Dr. Gruentzig’s first patient was named Dolf Bachmann. Mr. Bachmann was invited to the TCT from Switzerland to help celebrate and gave an inspirational talk to let us know what he has done with his life. Mr. Bachmann was thankful for the technique and pleased with the growth of the industry. He was gracious enough to pose for a photo with three members of the SICP, a society dedicated to the procedure he volunteered for on September 16, 1977. TCT is sponsored by the Cardiovascular Research Foundation and they do an outstanding job putting together a world-class conference. I have been to many meetings in my 26-year career. My suggestion would be to put this one on your agenda. You will not be disappointed. ■ Darren Powell can be contacted at DPowell@scc.spokane.edu Darren Powell, RCIS, FSICP (left) with Dolf Bachmann, Dr. Andreas Gruentzig’s first human patient.
