The King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre Keith Barron, Ba App Sc in Med Rad, Radiographer, Quality Coordinator CCL, Clinical Services Quality Management Team Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia What is the size of your cath lab facility and number of staff members? The King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH&RC) is an 844-bed multi-facility, multientity hospital located in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It is the largest tertiary care institution in the Kingdom, with nearly 700 consultants, and has an average annual referral of over 32,000 inpatients and 600,000 outpatients. It was first opened in 1975 with a 120-bed capacity and its purpose was to provide the people of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia tertiary care to avoid the hardship and cost of traveling abroad. KFSH&RC caters for a mix of both pediatric and adults patients, and because of their tertiary referral nature, we in the cath lab deal with some of the most complex and high-risk patients in the Middle East. continued on page 20 What is MyoCell therapy and what are the advantages of using myoblast cells in particular for treatment of myocardial tissue? MyoCell therapy utilizes autologous (patient-derived) skeletal myoblast cells injected percutaneously into damaged myocardium via catheter with the intended purpose of improving ventricular function. Myoblasts are muscle progenitors and fulfill two of the criteria of adult stem cells: they can differentiate into mature skeletal muscle cells and they can divide to replenish themselves. Progenitor cells, which are present in all of us at birth, serve to replace damaged skeletal muscle throughout the body. Autologous cells, utilized for MyoCell therapy, are harvested from the patient in whom they are to be later re-implanted, a very personalized form of medical therapy. Unfortunately, the heart is not blessed with an abundance Figure 1. MyoCell® Clinical Cell Therapy — Myoblasts are injected into the scar tissue of the heart (infarct area) via a needle-injection catheter, where they can engraft, form new muscle and enhance pumping of the heart. continued on page 8 STEMI INTERVENTIONS Performance Improvement Strategies Speed Up Treatment Times in the Management of ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) Patients Sara Moseley, RN, MS, Performance Improvement Coordinator, Patient Safety and Quality, Deryck Yarde, RN, BSN, CCRN, Manager, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, Haleh Eskandari, RN, MSN, CCRN, RCIS, Clinical Educator, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia; Jack Chen, MD, FACC, FSCAI, FCCP, Northside Cardiology P.C., Atlanta, Georgia May 2008 vol.16, no.5 F or patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), the early use of primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to restore coronary perfusion is associated with significant reductions in mortality and morbidity.
