Cath Lab Digest - October 2007 - (Page 55) 55 Virtual Cath Lab (VCL) (‘Modes’ cont.): 3. Bi-Plane VCL, including ‘MRI mode’ One of the great things about creating a virtual environment is that you can do things that simply are not possible in the real world. With a couple of keystrokes, you can turn the biplane VCL into an MRI scanner, enabling instant correlation of fluoroscopic anatomy with cross-sectional MRI anatomy. While in ‘Screening Enabled’ mode, press ‘C’ on your keyboard (this will switch to cross-sectional mode) followed by the number ‘1’ (for 1mm slices). Now the images displayed on the frontal and lateral monitors are 1mm cross-sections. Two ‘scan planes’ will have appeared parallel to the image intensifier faces of the frontal and lateral tubes. These ‘scan planes’ represent the anatomical ‘cut’ that is being displayed on the monitors through the image intensifiers. The ‘scan planes’ can be moved up and down through the anatomy using the ‘ ’ keys on your keyboard. During this time the c-arm and table movements operate as normal. To this end, we hope to encourage an active user community to help us further develop our VCLs, so that our users take a lead in their development. Since Vycaria’s VCLs are essentially fluoroscopy simulators, we are theoretically able to use them to simulate any radiological procedure. At the moment, we are currently working on simulating barium meals, barium enemas and nephrostomies. We are also prototyping a plain film radiography simulator. ■ Please visit our websites for more details and a free download: http://vycaria.co.uk/ Shawn Larson, DCR(R), MSc, spent 18 years as a diagnostic radiographer across 6 London teaching hospitals, including 12 years in 5 different cath labs (part time). Following his MSc in Medical Informatics, he worked freelance developing interactive 3-dimensional virtual environments for a variety of clients before moving into RIS/PACS applications, then on to product management. He currently works for the National Health Service (NHS) as PACS Implementation Advisor for the northeast of England. He can be contacted at shawn@vycaria.co.uk. Gerard Mudd Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program Saint Louis University St. Louis, MO VCLs are computer-based fluoroscopy simulators and anatomical viewers. They use a real-time, interactive, 3D gamesrendering engine (similar to Playstation and Xbox) to deliver a PC-based “virtual catheterization laboratory” fluoroscopy simulation environment. TARGET AUDIENCE All nurses and technicians who work within the cardiac catheterization lab, regardless of experience.
