Improved Anatomical Orientation During AF Catheter Ablation: Experience from Leipzig Heart Center Christopher Piorkowski, MD and Gerhard Hindricks, MD, PhD University of Leipzig, Heart Center Cardiology, Department of Electrophysiology Leipzig, Germany page 33 ARCA Discovery Announces Data Demonstrating Potential for Bucindolol as Targeted Therapy in Heart Failure, Atrial Fibrillation, and Ventricular Arrhythmia ARCA Discovery announced that investigators presented new data analyses on ARCA Discovery’s product candidate bucindolol, a next-generation beta-blocker and vasodilator for heart failure, AF and arrhythmia, , from the Beta-blocker Evaluation of Survival Trial (BEST) at the AHA Scientific Sessions 2007. urrent procedures for the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF) are still in a process of development and evolution. Circumferential pulmonary vein ablation efficacy is not at the point where we can be satisfied with medium to long-term outcomes. We believe that this lack of efficacy is C multi-faceted and not solely related to pathophysiological concepts, but also to technical challenges such as three-dimensional (3D) anatomical orientation and stable, reproducible catheter access. At Leipzig Heart Center, we are experiencing some success with techniques and tools designed to rectify these challenges. One of the approaches we have recently begun to utilize is ablation within a 3D image of the patient’s left atrium without any further electroanatomical chamber reconstruction. This way, highly accurate and realistic anatomical information guide the navigation of the ablation catheter. continued on page 6 One EP Lab’s Solution to the Administration of Deep Sedation Tamara M. Metz, RN Riverside Methodist Hospital Columbus, Ohio page 33 See our Spotlight Interview on The Northeast Georgia Medical Center It is the responsibility of a registered nurse to provide a supportive clinical environment that ensures the safety and well being of each patient while maintaining the guidelines of his/her scope of practice. In September 2007, the Ohio Board of Nursing (OBN) published a clarification to the interpretive guidelines for deep sedation administration. The guidelines state that “a registered nurse who does not hold a certificate of authority to practice as a Certified Nurse Anesthetist should not: 1) Administer medications to induce deep sedation and /or anesthesia” or “2) Independently select the medication or dosage to be administered during a procedure.” 1 As a result of this clarification, there have been several procedural units in hospitals across Ohio that have altered the standard of practice for administering deep sedation. continued on page 12 I n this article, one EP lab nurse describes how her institution has handled the issue of deep sedation. http://www.eplabdigest.com
