Here are untouched groves that stagger the senses with their size, but are surprisingly easy to access. Humboldt County, home to the tallest and largest stands of old growth redwoods, offers many scenic drives and nature trails to experience the giants. Redwood National and State Parks and Humboldt Redwoods State Park are two prime places. To many, a redwood grove is a natural cathedral; there’s a sense of peace and reverence as one passes between the lofty pillars of trees and along the aisles of ferns, moss, sorrel and trillium, while high above sunlight shafts filter through the canopy like stained glass windows. Tallest of Them All The current tall tree recordholder, nearly 380 feet high, or almost six stories taller than the Statue of Liberty, is in Redwood National Park. While too remote for visitors, previous champions are accessible in the national park’s Tall Tree Grove and in Humboldt Redwoods State Park’s Rockefeller Forest.
