Redwood Coast Travel Guide 2008 - (Page 10) Ferndale the Victorian village ocally known as “Cream City,” Ferndale was founded by pioneer families looking to farm the fertile Eel River bottom lands. The rich pastures are ideal for dairy cows and successful farmers translated their prosperity into substantial homes known as “Butterfat Palaces.” As was the style at the time, these gaily-painted houses dripped with intricate gingerbread detail. The quiet neighborhoods and vintage Main Street have changed very little, and with its quaint bed and breakfast inns, unhurried pace and pastoral setting, Ferndale is an ideal refuge from the hectic world. Of particular note are the historic Ferndale cemetery, wild Russ Park and nearby Centerville Beach. The Ferndale Museum has displays of local history, while the Ferndale Art and Cultural Building is an enclave of working artists and craftspeople, and includes the off-the-wall Kinetic Sculpture Museum. The newlyopened Fern Cottage offers seasonal tours of a sprawling Victorian farmhouse.
