Life centers around the Arcata Plaza, surrounded by funky restaurants and shops, some in the landmark 1850s Jacoby Storehouse. The Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary, which features 100-plus acres of wetlands and trails, is popular with nature lovers, as is the Arcata Community Forest, which has miles of redwood trails for hikers, bikers and horseback riders. The HSU Natural History Museum, Arcata Skate Park and hillside Victorian neighborhoods are popular too. In the summer, the Humboldt Crabs, the oldest U.S. semi-pro baseball team, provide an inexpensive family treat. See the fans and marching band to appreciate the real entertainment in the stands. F ive miles east of Arcata on Hwy 299, Blue Lake, an old logging town with rows of Victorians near the Mad River, is home to the Dell’Arte physical comedy school and theater troupe, which trains many Cirque du Soleil circus clowns and hosts the month-long Mad River Festival in the summer.
