Redwood Coast Travel Guide 2008 - (Page 8) Eureka! arkley center magine an era of gracious living, grand mansions, arts and fine dining. In the city of Eureka that era is now! Founded in 1850 as a shipping center for the Trinity gold mines, Eureka grew prosperous through fishing, farming and especially logging. While her waterfront district built her reputation as a lusty, brawling timber town, her quiet neighborhoods grew ever more elegant as prosperous Eurekans built substantial homes from enduring redwood. Today Eureka is a virtual open air museum of architecture, dedicated to preserving one of the finest and largest collections of Victorian homes in the world. Nowhere is Eureka’s Victorian heritage more evident I a Victorian seaport than in Old Town (below), a meticulously preserved and restored district of unique shops, restaurants, galleries and museums. Many special events, including the Arts Alive! art walk on the first Saturday of each month, take place in Old Town, which includes a burgeoning Cultural Arts district. The recently constructed Eureka Boardwalk provides a waterfront view of Humboldt Bay, one that includes teeming wildlife as well as the bustle of a working seaport. Other popular Eureka attractions include Fort Humboldt State Historic Park, with displays of Native American and logging history; the Samoa Cookhouse, still serving lumberjack meals daily, and Sequoia Park and Zoo, an old-growth redwood forest tucked away in suburban Eureka, offering hiking trails, a duck pond, playgrounds and a charming little public zoo. With her exciting arts scene, magnificent architecture, fine dining and unique attractions and events, Eureka is a sparkling destination in her own right, as well as an ideal base for your Redwood Coast adventures.
