the beach OCEAN STRAND The Huntington Beach Ocean Strand –– 8-1/2 miles of paved trail — runs the length of the city along the beach, parallel with Pacific Coast Highway. This wide, wellmaintained path has been named the “#1 Place to Walk/Jog/Bike” by Orange County Register readers. You’ll have a clear view of the beach and ocean for most of its length. Restrooms and water are available. It also stretches beyond Huntington Beach north to Sunset Beach (1 mile in length) and south to Newport (nearly 3 miles). For an adventure, continue south to Newport Bay and on to San Diego. Or go inland on the Santa Ana River Trail; connect via the underpass near the bridge beyond Brookhurst Street. The trail is paved for about two miles, and then becomes a more rugged gravel trail across Orange County for an estimated 32 miles one way. Dogs are not allowed on the state beaches, but are allowed on the bike path only. WIRELESS INTERNET AVAILABLE! Huntington and Bolsa Chica State Beaches now offer AT&T Wi-Fi Service. Visitors can access the Internet within 150 feet of the Visitor Center/Beach Headquarters Building. AT A GLANCE BOLSA CHICA STATE BEACH 714.846.3460 www.parks.ca.gov LOCATION Along Pacific Coast Highway between Warner and Seapoint Avenues. Foot traffic enter at Warner Avenue; accessible by car through an entry point at the stoplight one mile south of Warner Avenue across from the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve entrance. HOURS Daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.; gate for vehicle entry closes at 9 p.m. BOLSA CHICA STATE BEACH On the northern end of Huntington Beach, across from the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, this state beach is known for its gentle, manageable surf, which makes it an ideal location to master surfing. Several surf schools teach here. Unlike other beaches that prohibit surfing during peak hours, surfing is allowed here all day year round, except south of the main tower during summer. The beach extends for three miles between Sunset Beach and Seapoint Avenue. Bolsa Chica is also known for its great surf fishing, bird and wildlife watching and the spring grunion run (see page 16). This beach offers an RV campground — you can stay overnight year round. 10 2008 I SURF CITY USA® PARKING $10/day; RVs are $34 to $44/ night in summer; $29 to $39/night during non-summer months. RV CAMPING Available year-round. Reservations must be booked through Reserve America at 800.444.7275. Electrical and water hookups, as well as a dump station, are available onsite.
