He was the first person to be paid to surf and to receive endorsements. Carroll started surfing while in the first grade; he competed professionally from 1959 until 1972, when he retired at age 24. He won five overall U.S. Championships, three international championships and about 100 other championships. He has maintained a visible presence in Surf City. While locals know Robert August’s warm smile and easy-going demeanor, the world knows him as the young man who followed the sun and surf in the original Endless Summer film. As part of that fame he boasts putting 35,000 miles on a single surfboard. Like most locals, Robert was a top contender in innumerable California contests, including the first Duke Kahanamoku Classic and West Coast Championships. Linda Benson began surfing when she was 11 by grabbing her brother’s board when he wasn’t on it. At the age of 15, Linda became the youngest contestant ever to enter the International Championship at Makaha. She won. Linda went on to win the first U.S. Championship at Huntington Beach in 1959. Winning over 20 first place titles from 1959 to 1969, Linda still found time to act as Annette Funicello’s surfing double in the Beach Party films and as Deborah Walley’s surfing double in Gidget Goes Hawaiian. up AND COmErS Local young surfers Tim Reyes, Brett Simpson and Chris Waring are described as gifted surfers to watch. They have climbed the ranks in world competitions. Junior phenoms include USA Surf Team members Sara Taylor (17) and Andrew Doheny (15). ULTIMATE CHALLENGE STATUE The City Public Art Program began in 1976 with the acquisition of the Ultimate Challenge surfer by artist Edmond Shumpert. It is located at the south end of Huntington City Beach, off PCH at Huntington Street. www.surfcityusa.com I 2008 13 http://www.surfboardsbythegreek.com http://www.surfingmuseum.org http://www.usopenofsurfing.com http://www.aspnorthamerica.org http://www.surfcityusa.com
