HUNTINGTON BEACH WETLANDS The 114-acre wetlands, including Talbert Marsh, stretch from south of Main Street at PCH to the Santa Ana River Trail. The area is home to the largest colony of nesting California Least Terns in North America. Portions are private property and some are owned by The Huntington Beach Wetlands Conservancy. Trail guides, wildlife guides to rare species, wetlands and estuaries, and bird checklists are available. There are several regular service days when volunteers clean and remove invasive non-native vegetation and plant native species. The public is invited to participate in this vital service to preserve Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve and the Huntington Beach Wetlands. Bolsa Chica Reserve > Third Saturday: The Bolsa Chica Land Trust Restoration Team meets from 9 a.m. to noon in the south parking lot. 714.717.6304 • www.bolsachicalandtrust.org > Last Saturday: The Bolsa Chica Conservancy SHIPLEY NATURE CENTER A vibrant 18-acre preserve teeming with animals, 85 species of birds and a wide variety of native California plant life. Visitors can enjoy 4,000 feet of trails that meander through oak and riparian woodlands, Torrey pines, meadows, coastal sage scrub and a natural freshwater wetland. The Interpretive Center displays the natural and geologic history of the area. Also featured are a California native plant nursery, and butterfly and hummingbird gardens. They are free and open to the public. Private tours are available for a fee. > First Saturday: Amigos de Bolsa Chica, a volunteer support group, offers free tours starting every 15 minutes between 9 and 10:30 a.m. Meet at south parking lot. Birders and nature lovers give this park high ratings. See page 44 for more information. HUNTINGTON BEACH CITY PARKS Several city parks offer less-developed options for a hike or relaxation. Bartlett Park, behind Newland House, is a wild and rustic park for hiking. Overlook Park includes native plants and views of the fields that once brought great riches to the City of Huntington Beach through oil drilling. It features one of the finest sunset views in Huntington Beach. Coastal Wetlands and Beaches > Second Saturday: Volunteers are needed to restore sand dunes.
