O spOrts & recreatIOn Outside of the beach, if you feel the need to move, there are many venues for physical activity around Huntington Beach. HUNTINGTON CENTRAL PARK The largest park in Huntington Beach is 354 acres of mature trees, rolling lawns and lakes. Amenities include picnic tables, barbecues, restrooms, playgrounds and six miles of paved trails and dirt paths. It is also home to the Huntington Beach Central Library & Cultural Center and The Huntington Beach Playhouse (see page 30). There are also two restaurants. 18000 Golden West Street. EQUESTRIAN CENTER This 25-acre facility, located within the park, includes three miles of public bridle paths, surrounded by 185 acres of public trails. Rent a horse by the hour or take a one-hour guided tour. Lessons available. Children must be 7 years old. Reservations required. SPORTS COMPLEX This 45-acre park features eight softball fields overlaid with eight soccer fields, seven batting cages and two playgrounds with concession stands. Groups may reserve fields and must provide insurance. Parking available. Reservation info: 714.536.5230 Batting cages open Monday to Friday, 3 to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Sunday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Open for drop-in use, or can be reserved. Call 714.375.3960. ADVENTURELAND PLAYGROUND Kids can raft on a small pond, go down a mudslide, navigate a rope bridge or build forts here. They must wear tennis shoes and be prepared to get dirty. Best suited to ages 6 to 12 years old. Open mid-June through mid-August, Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Enter from the east side of the Central Library parking lot. Admission $2/child. Adult supervision required. Near the Youth Shelter and Amphitheater 714.842.7442 • 714.536.5486 when closed DISC GOLF COURSE Huntington Central Park Disc (Frisbee®) Golf Course is an 18-hole course in a scenic, treelined setting with hills and a lake providing obstacles and traps. Designed in 1976 by the sport’s founder, Ed Headrick, it is one of the world’s original disc golf courses and contains patented Pole Hole targets. If you are a pro, or even if you have never heard of the game, you will appreciate this beautiful 54-par, 18-hole course, and the 5,400 feet of play space that can expand to 6,100 feet for tournament play. The pro shop sells golf discs. A concession stand offers snacks and beverages. Monday, 11 a.m. to dusk. Tuesday to Friday, 10 a.m. to dusk, entrance $1.50. Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to dusk, entrance $2.50. Children 15 and younger are free. 18381 Golden West St. (across from Sports Complex) 714.425.9931 18 stations located throughout the park along the paved walking path over a 1.2-mile loop. At each location, a map provides suggested exercise activities for building muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness. Join the trail from any of several parking locations such as the Central Library parking lot, Gothard Street lot between Talbert and Slater, Slater lot near Slater between Gothard and Golden West or Park Bench Cafe lot on Golden West between Slater and Talbert. 714.848.6565 LAKES Paths surround Huntington and Talbert Lakes in Central Park. Freshwater anglers also catch channel catfish, largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, rainbow trout and carp. Alice’s Breakfast in the Park is on the shore of Huntington Lake. Model boats that operate by electricity, steam, or sail are permitted on Huntington Lake.
