Adjacent to Huntington Central Park on Edwards Street is Best Friend Dog Park, where big and small dogs can play together or in their own separate sections. There is a dog walk of fame, snacks and seating for dog owners. Across the street from the dog park, on Golden West between Slater and Talbert, is the Park Bench Café, where dogs and their people can dine together at the outdoor café. Really, there’s a dog menu. For entertainment, Old World Village (see page 71) hosts the annual Wiener Nationals Dachshund Races in addition to monthly racing events for the short-legged competitors. FUN FACTs ABOUT LOCAL AMATEUR ATHLETEs Olympic hockey player Chanda Gunn is a native of Huntington Beach. As a goalie, she helped win a bronze medal for the USA Women’s Olympic Ice Hockey Team in 2006. Besides being a world-renowned athlete, she has epilepsy, which she manages with medication. She is a role model to many, proving that having epilepsy does not prevent great athletic achievement. Olympic swimmer Shirley Babashoff lives near here. Regarded as one of the top swimmers in history, she won eight Olympic medals, including gold medals in 1972 and 1976. In 1976, she also took four silver medals, losing to steroid-fueled East Germans. Speaking out against steroid use, she was first derided but later believed, although the medals were never changed. She has been inducted into the International Swimmers Hall of Fame and the Olympic Hall of Fame. Water Polo Olympian Robin Beauregard lives in Huntington Beach. A silver medalist at Syndey in 2000, she has world championship cups as well, and can reportedly bench press 200 pounds! The Summer Olympics Men’s Water Polo Team has three local members on the Senior National Team –– Genai Kerr lives in Huntington Beach and Bret Ormsby and Adam Wright live in nearby Seal Beach.
