Huntington Beach Visitors Guide 2008 - (Page 8) the beach AT A GLANCE HUNTINGTON CITY BEACH This is the “downtown” beach, identified by the iconic Pier. In the 1920s, the “Father of Surfing,” Duke Kahanamoku, became a legend at this spot as he brought surfing to the mainland from Hawaii. In the ’50s, Surf City was born here. This is indeed the place of which they write songs. The crowd action is here. Feel the excitement and energy today that has been here since it all began. Visit the world-famous Pier, the Pier Plaza where the beach meets the town, or enjoy the 3-1/2 miles of sand between Seapoint Avenue and Beach Boulevard. The waves here are consistently perfect, best for experienced surfers and body boarders. However, the waves break a distance from shore, so the area closest to shore is excellent for swimming. Surfing is prohibited south of the Pier during the summer when the beaches are crowded. Fire rings dot the beaches for evening entertainment. RV camping is allowed here from October through May. International surfing events are held below the Pier: the US Open of Surfing in late July attracts the great surfers of the world. The USA Surf Team trains here for its rigorous international competitions. You will find dozens of volleyball courts on the beach and, if visiting at the right time of year, watch the international AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tournament or the US Open of Beach Volleyball.
