Only about 1,200 monk seals live around the uninhabited islands and atolls of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Fewer than 25 Hawaiian monk seals ply the waters off Kaua‘i. If you see a monk seal sunning on the beach, you are required to remain at least 120 feet away. If you take a picture, turn the flash off. For more information, visit www.kauaimonkseal.com. As far as the eye can see, crags, buttes and gorges march into the distance colored in earthen hues of roses, lavenders, celadons and siennas.
