Kauai Travel Planner 2008 - (Page 10) DAVID BOYNTON ONE – LANE BRIDGES Drive with aloha, local-style. There are relatively few traffic lights on Kauaʻi in part because residents have developed a set of aloha traffic customs. Drive slowly; yield to others; and donʼt tailgate or sound your horn. On an island, everybodyʼs your neighbor. So when you come to a single-lane bridge, the rule is yield to oncoming traffic. If youʼre the oncoming traffic and thereʼs a line waiting on the other side, stop and let your neighbor across. THE LIT TLE TOWNS of Hanalei, Wainiha and Ha‘ena are situated so delicately on ¯ the landscape that the greenery seems to bloom with their colorful shops, galleries and restaurants. This land has produced food since the first Polynesians arrived here more than a thousand years ago. The picturesque kalo lo‘i, or flooded taro fields are ancient and fertile, producing most of the state’s taro for pounding into poi, the Hawaiian staff of life. Alongside the meandering two-lane Ku ¯ Highway, Wai‘oli Hui‘ia Church ¯hio still rings with Hawaiian hy mns on Sunday mornings, nourishing the congregation with more than sustenance. Behind it, the Wai‘oli Mission House—with its broad la ¯nai, lava chimney and period furniture—is a peek into yesterday’s Hawai‘i. You will fall in love with the amazing beaches of north Kaua‘i. At lovely Lumaha‘i, Mitzi Gaynor, star of Hollywood’s memorable musical, South Pacific, washed that man right out of her hair. There is great snorkeling at ‘Anini (Wanini) Beach, home of one of Hawai‘i’s longer reefs, where the water is four feet deep on one side and literally falls away on the other. Hanalei Bay lies in the embrace of mountains. In the morning, the water in the bay sits so looking glass still, the mountains appear to no longer stop at the shore. You will fall in love with the amazing beaches of north Kaua‘i. The road ends at Ke ¯ Beach, a ¯‘e location in the television mini-series, The Thorn Birds, starring Richard Chamberlain, and in Disney’s Castaway Cowboy, headlining James Garner and Vera Miles. Its reef is a lacy network of coral canyons beneath the spectacular cliffs of the Na ¯pali Coast. Nearby are ancient sea caves formed thousands of years ago when the sea level was higher. One, called the Dry Cave is like a cool yawn in the lava; the other, the Wet Cave shelters a pool of water. You can continue on foot.
