for your IN FOR M ATION GET TING TO K AUA‘I United Airlines flies non-stop to Kaua‘i daily from Los Angeles and San Francisco. American Airlines offers a non-stop, daily flight from Los Angeles. U.S. Airways flies non-stop from Phoenix. Aloha Airlines offers non-stop flights from Orange County and San Diego. Alaska Airlines from Seattle and Delta Airlines to begin in June. And ATA has a seasonal non-stop flight from Oakland. Aloha, American, ATA, Continental, Delta, Hawaiian, Northwest, United and U.S. Airways serve Honolulu International Airport. From there, it’s a quick 25-minute “island hop” on either Aloha Airlines, go! Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines or Island Air. If you are making a connection directly to Kaua‘i, you can check your baggage straight through. On Kaua‘i, ground transportation includes rental cars, hotel shuttles and taxis. Several companies provide guided tours aboard motor coaches, mini-buses, vans, four-wheel-drive vehicles and limousines. Since the point of Kaua‘i is to get around, most visitors rent cars. All the major rental car companies are represented. KEEP IT C A SUAL Dress for comfort. Think “light” in terms of colors and fabrics. Temperatures are cooler in the evening, and a jacket is recommended for those planning to venture into cool upland regions such as Koke‘e. Attire is ¯ “resort wear” even at Kaua‘i’s ﬁnest resorts and restaurants. It is the custom on Kaua‘i to remove your shoes when entering a home. This doesn’t apply to hotel rooms, but may be practiced at B&B’s, vacation rentals and condominiums. GOOD DAY, SUNSHINE You’ll want to show off a nice tan when you go home, but use common sense when you sunbathe in the tropics. Trust us on this one. A sunburn will develop faster than you thought possible so be sure to use sunscreen—at least 15 SPF if your skin tone is dark and up to 50 SPF if you’re fair. Remember, it’s usually hottest between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and the sun is stronger here than you’re probably used to. C LIM ATE CONTROL Kaua‘i has seven distinct microclimates, from the desert-like West Side to the tropical rain forest interior. Weather can vary from one part of the island to another, with anywhere from 20 to 40 inches of rainfall annually in some coastal areas, more in the upcountry and interior regions. PEST-FREE PAR ADISE Many plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth call Kaua‘i home. The ecosystem of the island is feeling stress resulting from the introduction of foreign species. When visiting Kaua‘i, please do your part to help protect this fragile balance. The Kauai Invasive Species Committee (KISC) is dedicated to preserving Kaua‘i’s biodiversity by preventing, controlling or eliminating the most threatening plant and animal species. The USDA enforces strict rules regarding the importation of uninspected plants and animals. Before landing in Hawai‘i, you will be required to complete a declaration form that asks about items you may be carrying with you. Prohibited items will be conﬁscated. When departing for the U.S. mainland, your luggage must pass a pre-ﬂight check at the airport to ensure that you are not carrying fruits or plants that have not been inspected for fruit ﬂies and other insects and diseases. You’re welcome to take fresh ﬂowers and fruits home, but they won’t pass inspection unless they’re properly certiﬁed beforehand. If you’re packing your own fruits, ﬂowers or plants, visit the inspection ofﬁce located in Lı hu‘e at 4398A Pua Loke St. (274-3071) ¯ before you go to the airport. GOING ONLINE Most of Kaua‘i’s larger hotels and condominium resorts have high-speed Internet access, including wireless in the public areas. Internet service is also available in the food court area of the Kukui Grove Shopping Centre. SMOKE-FREE PAR ADISE Hawai‘i values healthy lifestyles and fresh air. DRIVE WITH ALOHA On Kaua‘i we drive slowly and rarely if ever use the horn. Speed limits and seatbelt laws are strictly enforced. Buckle up and enjoy your vacation on beautiful Kaua‘i! AT THE BEAC H All of Kaua‘i’s 45 white sand beaches are open to the public. There are no nude beaches on the island. Nudity is prohibited in Hawai‘i and this law is enforced. The island is actively developing ways to diversify the economy, including aquaculture and tropical ﬂower cultivation.
