Cruise the relatively flat terrain of Po‘ipu and find a hidden ¯ beach. Head to the East Shore for a scenic ride on the Kaua‘i Costal Path. From mauka to makai (mountain to the sea), it’s all downhill on the 12-mile Waimea Canyon Drive to the old plantation town of Kekaha. You will sweep past stands of Japanese sugi pines and fragrant fields of tropical flowers. Mountain bike riders can also tackle the Powerline Trail, a rough and rutty 11-mile dirt road over an early Hawaiian footpath that’s considered Kaua‘i’s best off-road track. dANA EdMUNdS CAMPING ON KAUA‘I Campers on Kaua‘i have a choice of vastly different environs—wet or dry, warm or cool, by the sea or high in the mountains. You may choose to spend a few nights near the shore in Kalalau Valley. Or you may prefer the songs of rare native forest birds in 4,000foot high K oke‘e State Park . At ‘Anini ¯ (Wanini) Beach, gentle onshore trade winds ruffle the waves along a twomile-long reef, one of the longer reefs in Hawai‘i. Snorkeling and windsurfing are right outside your tent flap.
