Sustainability News Canadian Agency Funds Assessment of Intermodal Hub The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency has allocated funds to four applicants who have expressed an interest in participating in an environmental assessment of an intermodal and logistics hub proposed by the Canadian National Railway Company. Located in Milton, Ontario, about 30 miles west of Toronto, the project would include a railway yard with more than 12 miles of track. CN would construct and operate the logistics hub which would transfer containers between trucks and railcars. The funds will be used to assist recipients to review and comment on review panel terms of reference and on the environmental impact statement, as well as to prepare for and participate in the public hearing for the project. Separately, Canadian National Railway has released its fifth sustainability report describing its programs and achievements in environmental sustainability, safety, corporate governance, community involvement and human resources. Carbon Levy Increasingly Likely A carbon levy was gaining momentum at climate talks in Paris. Whether a fuel-use or market-based mechanism, the ocean shipping industry expected its costs to rise. "We do expect that sooner or later shipping will be regulated on CO2 ," John Kornerup Bang, lead advisor on climate change with Maersk Group, told Reuters. A study by the International Maritime Organization indicated the industry reduced greenhouse gas emissions from 2.8 percent of the world total to 2.2 percent in the five-year period to 2012. The study projected a rise in ocean shipping industry CO2 emissions of 50 percent by 2050 depending on the pace of world trade and what action is taken. We're gaining momentum Ship emissions were omitted from national commitments under the U.N.'s 1997 Kyoto Protocol. Control, under that agreement, was ceded to the IMO. The IMO claims it has reduced airborne emissions by mandatory regulations. The European Commission has set a deadline for the IMO to present CO2 cutting measures at the end of 2016. Norfolk Southern Installs "Eco" Locomotives At its 47th Street intermodal facility in Chicago, Norfolk Southern has dedicated a new fleet of environmentally friendly "Eco" rail-yard locomotives which meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Tier-3 emissions standards. The 3,000-horsepower engines are branded "Eco" locomotives for their operating efficiencies and for reducing emissions and fuel consumption. Fifteen of the locomotives are planned for operation at the company's five major Chicago rail yards by the end of 2015.
