3PLs - from page 9
In the long run, shippers
continue to spend more on
logistics services, and the need for
data and other information will not
diminish in the coming years.
If someone didn't sell prior to
things getting weak, and if they
can get through the next year,
then we expect profits to recover,
multiples to rebound, and it could
be a very good time to be a seller
beginning in the second half of
2017 probably into early 2019.
Insights: How much of a
competitive advantage do 3PLowned assets provide?
Albrecht: I think for intermodal
they provide a huge advantage. But
that's not to say that the non-asset
IMC can't thrive. There are hundreds
of companies that do not own
containers. I think the key again boils
down to the management teams
and the tightness of the relationships
they have with railroads and the
agents that they choose to serve.
And, if they're passionate and work
very hard on those elements, there's
absolutely a place for non-asset IMCs
to continue to thrive.
Insights: Does it all come back to
relationships then?
Albrecht: I would say, in
this type of environment, the
relationship with the shipper/
customer is probably more
important than any because that
shipper has more options with
loose trucking capacity and the
best access to the large asset-based
IMC companies than they've had in
probably five years. So, if you don't
take care of that customer they're
going to certainly [respond] to all
those other phone calls they're
getting on ways to move their
freight.
