FREIGHT - from page 15 Truck Tonnage Falls Back in June American Trucking Associations' advanced seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index decreased 1.5 percent in June, following a revised 2.9 percent gain during May. In June, the index equaled 137.2, based on ATA's convention of 2000=100, down from 139.3 in May. The all-time high was 144 in February. The not-seasonally-adjusted index, which represents the change in tonnage actually hauled by the fleets before any seasonal adjustment, equaled 142.2 in June, which was 2.2 percent above the previous month. "The seesaw pattern continued again in June with tonnage falling after a good rise in May," said ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello. "On a monthto-month basis, tonnage has been down in three of the last four months, totaling 4.7 percent since February. "Looking ahead, I expect the freight environment will remain choppy. The good news for trucking is we are the most diverse mode of all freight transportation sectors between industrial and consumer freight. We are currently benefiting from the consumer side while being hurt on the industrial side. And of course we still have the inventory glut that is weighing down tonnage," he said. The electric cranes also enhance nighttime operations through new highpowered LED lighting. The project is part of a $100 million investment in building the port of the future, according to Roy Schleicher, executive vice president and chief commercial officer for JAXPORT. Working in conjunction with the rebuilt dock and state-of-the-art cranes, JAXPORT's newly opened Intermodal Container Transfer Facility at Dames Point provides on-dock rail transportation solutions for both the Blount Island and Dames Point Marine Terminals. Late Gates for SEATAC The Northwest Seaport Alliance of Seattle and Tacoma announced it will reimburse international container terminal operators up to $2 million to extend their gates. The program will include flex gates from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., keeping the terminal gates open during the longshore lunch hour, and one offshift gate each week either after 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or during any shift on Saturday or Sunday. Port News - continued on page 19 Port News Jacksonville Terminal Nears Completion A multi-faceted rehabilitation project of Berth 35 at JAXPORT's Blount Island Marine Terminal is nearing completion with the installation of a high-voltage electrical system. This is in preparation for three new 100-gauge electric container cranes. The improvements will increase energy efficiencies and reduce emissions over diesel-powered cranes.
