Trinium targets drayage fleets that are seeking to upgrade
technology that some large truckload carriers have because of
their deeper pockets. One example of that data trend is the ability
of smaller drayage fleets to use the "cloud" for data management
through a monthly user fee, instead of buying a server and investing in software and licensing.
Lane estimated that about 30 percent of Trinium customers'
drivers are using a mobile app to communicate information such
as proof of delivery, with the potential for a significant increase in
the next three to five years. In the past year alone, there has been a
30 percent increase in drivers using mobile technology, he added.
Compcare Services, another provider of intermodal TMS,
focuses on billing automation, load matching and other services,
filling a real-time gap, delivering proof of delivery and bill of lading
information quickly, said company
president Jim Hickman.
Lane and Hickman both stressed
the importance of having a TMS that
is focused on container drayage, with
the ability to manage unique intermodal features such as per diem, storage
and chassis management that aren't
focuses of a generic truckload TMS.

Matchbacks
Todd Ericksrud, CEO of MatchBack Systems, said his company relies on algorithms to help customers who primarily handle

international freight to find equipment that can be reloaded after
an initial delivery.
He estimated that between 20 percent and 30 percent of
international freight has a feasible and reasonable matchback
opportunity, excluding factors such as specialized freight
characteristics and weather disruptions. He said matchbacks
lower costs, estimated at $150 to $400 per box, and also reduce
emissions.
MatchBack Systems focuses on the shipper, ocean carrier
or forwarder for a matchback instead of the trucker, since the
BCO is strongly motivated to create the lowest overall transport
costs. That approach has to take into account individual users'
business rules and market conditions such as demand surges or
the amount of time before a box is released and made available
for a matchback, he added.
Jason Hilsenbeck, founder of
LoadMatch, said it was striking that
there are so few street turns for ocean
carrier equipment, which he attributed
in large part to the larger number of
ocean carriers and alliances compared with a smaller number of
domestic box users. The wider variety
in ocean carrier equipment types,
compared with domestic containers
