2018 Questions
While intermodal growth was
forecast, economists were cautious
about 2018 and beyond.
William Strauss, senior economist
at the Federal Reserve Bank of
Chicago, said, "The risk to the economy
isn't domestic. We have to look
overseas at geopolitical risks," such
as North Korea. He said there was
no reason the current slow growth
couldn't continue, as hurricane damage

output in the final 2017 quarter.
Jones Lang LaSalle economist Walter Kemmsies believes
there hasn't yet been an investment boom during the current
recovery other than e-commerce, though he held out the hope
that the Trump administration's policies still could take hold and
aid the economy.
Larkin described the slow economic pace as "both a
blessing and a curse" because growth has been prolonged at
the same time that the next recession is being avoided because

inflation hasn't become overheated.
Strauss offered a cautionary anecdote about how business
perceptions change over time. He reminded attendees that not
long ago Walmart was seen as the giant retailer that would
reshape commerce, instead of Amazon today. He said not to rule
out the possibility that "someone could out-Amazon Amazon."
