INTERNATIONAL INTERMODAL NEWS
New Facilities Are Focused
to Boost Service, Capacity
Activities that are intended to expand
and enhance international intermodal
service capability and reliability have
continued to surface throughout the
supply chain.
Much of the international inland
intermodal focus has been on several
recently announced steps to speed
the movement of freight in and around
ocean carrier terminals. Those projects
complement inland ports that have been
developed in Virginia, Georgia and South
Carolina. (See related article, page 19.)
In Oakland, California, port
commissioners gave final approval to
a transloading and distribution facility
located on port property that once served
as an Army supply depot.
The initiative is intended to deliver
cargo faster to inland points by doing
transloading and distribution right on the
docks instead of at warehousing facilities
that have to be reached through a truck
move.
"The future is at hand," said Port of
Oakland Executive Director Chris Lytle.
"We've got a great development partner,
a great plan for the community and
a new direction that will set us apart
from competitors once the deal is fully
approved."
The deal calls for CenterPoint to
develop a 440,000 square foot, $52 million

facility, following 20 months
of negotiations
between the
developer and
more than 30
groups that
included labor
and community
organizations.
Construction
Lytle
could start as
early as the first quarter of 2018, with
eventual expansion to cover nearly 180
acres.
CenterPoint Chief Development
Officer Michael Murphy said Oakland "has
a thoughtful vision for the future and with
this agreement we can help them bring it
to life."
The project also features what
backers said was a "groundbreaking jobs
policy" that included preferential hiring for
residents, especially those who live near
the port.
On the East Coast, Columbia
Container Services began operating a
chassis depot in Elizabeth, New Jersey
that offers both TRAC Intermodal and
Direct ChassisLink equipment, increasing
the equipment options for motor carriers
at the Port of New York and New Jersey.
Columbia CEO Bruce Fenimore said,
"I think it's going to help the port's growth
tremendously. I think it's the beginning

A key development in November
was the announcement that the
International Longshoremen's
Association and the United States
Maritime Alliance would begin
meeting in December about a contract
extension. It would cover East and
Gulf Coast ports, with an eye toward
ensuring dependable service next year
and beyond.
The existing ILA agreement with
USMX expires on Sept. 30, 2018.
The contract currently in place required intervention from the U.S. Labor
Department after multiple extensions
that created widespread uncertainty
among shippers and carriers alike.
The West Coast dockworkers'
contract is in place through mid-2022.

of a great situation where all chassis are
off-terminal. Truckers can go in, get an
available chassis and get out."
The 31-acre facility with space for
4,000 chassis began operations on Oct.
30, adding equipment flexibility as larger
container ships began arriving at the
port following the raising of the Bayonne
Bridge.
The facility, also known as the
Maher Chassis Depot, was the latest
development in the port-wide effort to
enhance chassis options.
