IANA NEWS
IANA Launches Next Generation Initiative
IANA has established the Future Intermodal Leaders Program
to guide, engage and encourage the professional advancement of
the next generation of intermodal leaders. FILP is open to individuals from member companies who are 40 years or younger and
have less than 10 years of experience in the intermodal industry.
We are also seeking mentors for the program who are willing
to share their knowledge and experience with this next generation.
For additional information on the program and to submit a
Future Intermodal Leaders application or a mentor interest form,
please visit www.intermodal.org/members/filp.

Roundtables, Speakers Announced for
O&M Meeting
IANA's annual spring Chicagoland event, the Operations &
Maintenance Business Meeting, will engage attendees on the
industry's most pressing O&M issues. The event will be held May
1-3 at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center.
Three general sessions, moderated by Pat Casey of TTX
Company, Larry Gross of Gross Transportation Consulting and

Phil Connors of Philip V. Connors + Associates, kick off and
conclude the Wednesday programming.
Four facilitated roundtables are at the center of the problemsolving the same day:

* Defining the Maintenance & Repair Agenda: Innovations for
Intermodal M&R

* Defining the Operations Agenda: Innovations for Intermodal
Operations

* How Can M&R Practices Maximize Terminal Throughput?
* Intermodal Safety Priorities
Full roundtable and general session descriptions, as well as
speakers, can be found on the events page at www.intermodal.org.
IANA's Operations as well as the Maintenance & Repair
Committee will meet on Thursday. Open to all, the meetings will
feature educational presentations from FASTPORT and Port of
Virginia representatives.
The Annual Golf Outing, tours of BNSF and Union Pacific
intermodal facilities, along with the Supplier Showcase and
Networking Reception, round out the three-day program.

IANA Scholarship Spotlight
Editor's note: Over the past 10 years,
IANA has awarded more than $2 million to
support students in university programs
focused on freight and intermodal
transportation. In this edition of the
IANA Scholarship Spotlight, University of
Maryland Professor Tom Corsi, faculty
advisor, discusses how the Supply Chain
Management Fellows Program at the
school benefits participants.
IANA has supported the Supply
Chain Management Fellows Program at
the Robert H. Smith School of Business,
University of Maryland, since the 20072008 academic year. During this time,
approximately 250 students have
graduated from the program which has
several components that help to build
the students' knowledge base and gain
exposure to industry thought leaders.
An Industry Leaders Executives
Seminar is part of the course curriculum
where experts in intermodal transportation
and logistics are invited to speak about
their experiences and answer questions
from the students. The seminar includes
as many as six presentations during the
fall semester, including several made by
IANA board members. Students interact

and discuss issues in small groups
after doing research on the presenter's
company.
Intermodal EXPO provides the
students with knowledge enhancement
and professional networking opportunities
through attendance at the educational
sessions, visits to the exhibit floor and
in the networking events at the meeting.
For some, an important part of their
experience at EXPO is participation in the
student case competition, which requires
them to present a best-case solution to
a complex intermodal problem. Students
have an opportunity to showcase their
skills, while the professional community
assesses how industry aspirants problem
solve and address difficult issues.
The program also maintains the
Intermodal Jobs Portal, integrated with
the Smith School's career services, which
is an avenue for IANA member companies
to be matched with job applicants.

The Fellows Program also includes
research projects. Currently, the students
have designed a survey to collect data
from shippers regarding their shipping
patterns as well as their use of intermodal
services.
The survey was distributed in March
to the approximately 100,000 subscribers
of Logistics Management magazine.
This research component provides the
students with an excellent opportunity
to learn, at a very detailed level, from
the experts who use intermodal. Survey
results will be compiled, incorporated into
a report and will be made available to the
members.
The graduates of the Fellows
Program have done very well in securing
professional positions and many are
now employed in prominent managerial
positions in the transportation, logistics
and supply chain sectors.
