Business Meeting 2018 Recap:
Creating the Future of Intermodal
A
ttendees at IANA's Operations & Maintenance Business Meeting in Lombard, Illinois,
May 1-3, came together as the intermodal industry announced robust 7.2 percent
growth in the first quarter of 2018. For those arriving on Tuesday for golf and the tours of
BNSF and UP's facilities at the CenterPoint Intermodal Center in Joliet/Elwood, the weather
was likewise sunny.
Setting the Stage
To open the meeting on
Wednesday, IANA Chairman Adriene
Bailey made welcoming remarks,
speaking to a range of issues and
opportunities - blockchain to
terminal automation, chassis design
to asset management - that are
dramatically changing the way we
conduct business. She noted that
innovation and collaboration, what
the Business Meeting is about, will
be all the more important going forward.
The general session continued with Frank Adcock of TTX,
who provided a look back at intermodal's 4.7 percent growth
in 2017 and at the first quarter results of 2018, as well as a
look forward
at some
expected
outcomes for
the full 2018
year. The
discussion
that followed,
moderated by
Larry Gross
of Gross
Transportation
