RECAP
committee leaders Kevin Lhotak of Reliable Transportation
Specialists and Wilby Whitt of CSX Intermodal Terminals.

Standard Industry Safety Rules and Procedures
at Intermodal Facilities
Prevatt, task force leader, said the Standard Industry Safety
Rules and Procedures at Intermodal Facilities Task Force
recommended that its work be transitioned to the newly formed
Safety Committee, which was recently approved by IANA's
board of directors. As accomplishments, he highlighted not
only the recommended practices produced, but their additional
outputs, including a drayman safety handbook, safety resource
information, data metrics they have collected and reported on,
and a draft charter for the Safety Committee.
On that note, the committee suggested additional
projects to be considered for the Safety Committee such as
enhancement of its work on safety metrics; a training guide;
and the creation of intermodal recommended practices related
to OSHA recommendations, as well as for the stacking of
empty/loaded containers and for the use of pin locks on parked
loaded equipment.

Intermodal Chassis Driver Vehicle Inspection
Reporting Standards
"Mission Accomplished" was the message from Hensal,
leader of the Intermodal Chassis Driver Vehicle Inspection
Reporting Standards Task Force. After producing a video and a
driver vehicle information card in late 2017, the group went on
to implement a communications plan to engage stakeholders,
including a webinar to publicize the task force's work and of its
benefits.
The recommendation to sunset the task force was made,
Hensal said, while efforts to continue to increase compliance
continue. The issue will be revisited in 2019 to measure
improvements.

Turn Times at Intermodal Facilities
The Optimal Driver Turn Times at Intermodal Facilities Task
Force reported it had fulfilled its mandate. The group developed
a standard definition for driver turn times and a calculator tool
to measure turn times at different types of intermodal facilities.
Hampton Lee, Task Force Co-Leader along with Stevenson
Kemp, both from South Carolina Ports Authority, indicated
having challenges with collecting enough data to populate the
tool in order to develop optimal turn times, but recommended
sunsetting the task force.
The task force recommended further research on the
various components of overall turn time, including the use
and availability of current information technology. Along these
lines, the committee decided to hold a listening session with
motor carriers on driver turn times during the next committee
meeting, which will be on Sept. 16, 2018 at Intermodal EXPO.

Making Sense of the Data
Joe Ruddy, chief information officer, Port of Virginia made
an informative presentation covering how the port tracks its
own performance and uses predictive analytics to analyze
its data and present actionable information to executives,

business managers and other end users. Moreover, he
discussed how the port's data can assist in garnering grant
support, capital prioritization, business case development,
equipment life cycle cost modeling and budget development.
Following a question and answer period, the previous
day's roundtable feedback was discussed, drawing attention
to the number one identified operational issue - information
gaps. Truck and driver capacity was a close second, and it
was notable, he said, that none of the roundtable participants
polled listed chassis condition as an issue. Among other key
issues identified, were bottlenecks that limit freight visibility
along with customer level information, such as arrivals and
appointments.

Getting off the Ground
The Intermodal Safety Committee planning meeting was
also held on Thursday afternoon. This was an organizing
meeting, held in advance of its first official committee meeting
at September's Intermodal EXPO. Chaired by Fred Marsicano of
ContainerPort Group and vice-chaired by Vernon Prevatt of CSX
Intermodal Terminals and Greg Barker from Ports America, the
assembled group discussed the committee charter, the output
of the previous day's safety roundtable and topics from that
roundtable for consideration in the committee's work plan for
fall meeting, as well as safety performance metrics and KPIs.

What the Future Looks Like
The final meeting of the event was the first gathering of
the participants in the Future Intermodal Leaders Program.
Both the members and mentors shared their goals around
participating in this initiative. The members specifically shared
they are looking for opportunities to network, grow their
business, foster a more entrepreneurial spirit in the intermodal
industry and gain skills and knowledge, among other items.
The mentors shared that they are looking for people to succeed
them, and they are looking forward to developing the next
generation of intermodal leaders. Special programming and
networking opportunities, including Intermodal University
educational sessions, tours and a networking reception at
EXPO, were highlighted, and participant needs and desires for
programming were discussed.
