Intermodal Marketing Companies
(IMCs) finished the year moving in the
same direction as most of 2016. For
the surveyed companies, intermodal
volume continued to drop sharply,
while highway volume growth accelerated. On the intermodal side, the 11.2%
year-over-year drop was almost exactly
the same as in Q3. Meanwhile highway
loads rose in Q4 year-over-year at more
than double the pace of Q3, soaring a
significant 37.3%.
Also consistent with earlier trends,
much of the year-over-year change is
concentrated in a few of the surveyed
IMCs. For intermodal loads, one IMC
accounted for all of the total decline.
For others, total intermodal loadings
rose 5%. That is well in line with overall
domestic container growth, which is
the vast majority of the IMCs' intermodal volume. It is also an improvement
from Q3 when there was little growth
excluding one of the survey responders. And two of the surveyed IMCs account for much of the highway growth,
with the rest of those surveyed climbing 14% in the highway segment.
On a monthly basis, IMC intermodal
loads slowed throughout the quarter,
in line with normal seasonal patterns.
Total intermodal loads dropped from
just over 148,000 in October to just
over 136,000 in December. Each month
also was down from the prior year.
And while October is typically the peak
month for IMC intermodal volume, August was slightly higher than October
in 2016.
Highway loads moved down a
different path, with each Q4 month
delivering gains over the prior month.
This segment set a new high in December, rising just shy of 176,000 loads.
While over the longer term intermodal
had consistently been a larger share
of IMC volume, that was reversed in
early 2016. December marked the tenth
consecutive quarter when highway was
a bigger share of total loads. They were
56% of the IMC total in December.
