Intermodal Market Trends & Statistics - 1st Quarter 2017 - 8

Also notable is that intermodal volume
for the IMC market was growing
more quickly than for the domestic
intermodal segment as a whole, where
loads rose by just over 1% in Q1. This
shows that the IMC's gained some
share from other domestic intermodal
operators during early 2017. In fact,
IMC share of total domestic loads rose
from 19.0% in Q1 2016 to 19.5% in Q1
2017. Strong highway volume was up
year-over-year all three months of Q1,
but slowed from a 19% gain in January
to a 6% gain in March. This likely is
consistent with tightening trucking
capacity, which has historically limited
IMC highway volume gains. Still, for all
three months, highway loads exceeded
intermodal loads for the IMCs that are
surveyed. This was consistent with
2016, but in prior years intermodal
loads had a much higher share of the
IMC market. That could switch again if
trucking capacity continues to tighten
in the coming months.
Also, loadings were down in Q1 2017
compared to Q4 2016 for both highway
and intermodal loads. This is a normal
seasonal pattern, with holiday-driven
volume most often strong in Q4
while Q1 winter volume is typically
the slowest. This is evident in the
seasonally adjusted data noted above,
with total domestic intermodal volume
down sharply, but flat on a quarterto-quarter basis when seasonally
adjusted.
Intermodal moves generate more
revenue for the surveyed IMCs than
do highway loads. This likely reflects
that highway loads are shorter length
of haul than intermodal loads. As a
result, average revenue per intermodal
load is nearly twice as much as average
revenue per highway load. Yet both rose
solidly year-over-year, with an identical
1.9% average revenue increase for
each segment. Average revenue also
was down from Q4, but that, too, is a
normal seasonal pattern. Also for both
segments, monthly revenue per load

railroads' most promising segment for
accelerated growth in the coming years
is domestic intermodal, helped not only
by trucking's capacity, but also by the
railroads' need to replace lost volume
and get back on the growth track. This
offers IMCs even more opportunities
for healthy growth in the future.

Combining the strong rise in volume
and the modest gain in average
revenue, total IMC revenue rose 8.4%,
topping $1.6 billion for Q1 2017.
Highway revenue climbed at a higher
pace, up 13.8% compared to 5.6% for
intermodal. Highway's absolute revenue
