Intermodal Market Trends & Statistics - 2nd Quarter 2017 - 3

Q2, above the industry average
of 5.6%. Canadian trailers did
even better jumping 10.4% in Q2.
Unfortunately, only 8.6% of total
domestic container and 3.9% of
trailer moves originate in Canada,
so the impact of the stronger than
average growth in Canada has a
muted effect on overall intermodal
growth rates. However, almost
one in four international moves
originates in Canada. As a result,
the strong growth in Canada played
a big role in pulling up the overall
international growth rate. Excluding
Canadian originations, international
intermodal gained just 3.4%. This
means that Canadian international
accounted for roughly half of the
growth in Q2, despite being less
than a fourth of the overall market.
Domestic container growth
more than doubled from Q1 to Q2,
increasing 3.2% compared to 1.3%
growth in Q1. Over half of domestic
containers gains in Q2 were in the
Southwest region, where shipments
were 8.8% higher than in the
previous year, the strongest growth
of any region. However, Southwest
domestic container shipments are
much more likely to be transloaded
international freight than domestic
containers from other regions. Thus
the strong growth in this region's
shipments is more likely to be
tied to an increase in Southwest
container imports and an increase
in transloading than to other factors
that might push domestic freight
higher.

Outside the Southwest, domestic container growth was
just 2.0%. As noted above, domestic containers did well in
Western and Eastern Canada. Domestic containers also did
well in the Northwest where they are also disproportionately
influenced by transloading. However in both the Midwest
and Southeast regions, domestic container volumes slipped
below last year's levels. Trucking conditions have tightened
a bit since Q1, however it seems that they have not done so
sufficiently to propel domestic containers higher.

2016

2017

Surprisingly, trailers managed to rise 3.9% in Q2. However,
Q2's result is likely do to the exceptionally poor performance
in Q2 of the previous year when trailer shipments
plummeted 28.6%. Generally speaking, the regions that
recorded larger intermodal increases in Q2 of this year were
those that saw the biggest decreases in Q2 of 2016.
