Despite the strong performance
of international intermodal in Q2,
seasonally adjusted international
volumes actually declined 2.0% from
Q1 to Q2. This may say more about
Q1's strength than any potential
weakness in Q2. Even with the
decline from Q1 to Q2, Q2 seasonally
adjusted international volumes were
higher than at any point in 2016.
In contrast, seasonally adjusted
domestic intermodal volumes have
been more or less flat for the past
three quarters. Still, seasonally
adjusted domestic volumes did
manage to gain a minimal 0.1% from
Q1 to Q2. As a result, seasonally
adjusted domestic volumes hit a new
record high in Q2.

Key Corridor Results
The Corridor Growth graph, based on data in the chart on page 18, shows bi-directional activity for the seven largest volume
corridors. These high density lanes accounted for 63.0% of total volume and were up 4.0% in the quarter. Six of the seven
largest corridors recorded gains in intermodal shipments. Only the Midwest-Northwest corridor declined, posting a drop of less
than 1.0%.
y The Trans-Canada lane grew
11.4% in Q2 year-over-year, far
surpassing any other corridor. Domestic and international containers both showed strong increases
after an already impressive Q1.
Domestic loads recorded a robust
improvement of 8.2% while international advanced even further
at 12.9%. Domestic loads rose
by 8.4% year-over-year, but poor
trailer performance pulled domestic growth down slightly.
