Beverage World - May 2008 - (Page 14) Boston Beer Tops Craft Brewers List The Brewers Association (Boulder, Colo., USA) released its annual list of the Top 50 brewing companies, including a ranking of the Top 50 craft brewing companies and the Top 50 overall brewing companies, based on 2007 sales. The Boston Beer Co., maker of the Samuel Adams line of brews, leads the Top 50 craft brewers list, retaining its spot from last year’s ranking. Sierra Nevada, New Belgium Brewing Co., Spoetzl Brewery, the makers of Shiner Beer, and Pyramid, rounded out the top five. The remaining top 20 craft brewers were Matt Brewing, Deschutes Brewery, Boulevard Brewing, Full Sail Brewing, Harpoon Brewery, Alaskan Brewing, Magic Hat Brewing, Anchor Brewing, Bell’s Brewery, Shipyard Brewing, Abita Brewing, Gordon Biersch, Brooklyn Brewery and Stone Brewing. “The majority of breweries in the US are independent craft brewers who continue to push the envelope in flavor and diversity and who continue to set the pace for the beer category,” says Paul Gatza, director of the Brewers Association. In the Limelight On the heels of Miller Brewing’s successful launch of lime and salt-flavored Miller Chill last year, Anheuser-Busch rolled out Bud Light Lime last month, hoping to capitalize on the growing trend of flavored beers. According to the company, Bud Light Lime is a crisp light lager that combines the drinkability of Bud Light with a splash of 100 percent natural lime flavor. A-B also launched Budweiser and Bud Light & Clamato Chelada, a popular Mexican cocktail, last year. Correction On page S25 of Beverage World's State of the Industry report in the April issue, a caption below the Craft Beer Growth chart was mislabeled. While the chart was correct, the caption ranked the top premium beer brands rather than craft brands, based on Beverage Marketing Corporation data. Beverage World regrets the error.
