PACKAGING comes to their environmental stewardship. Yes, it’s true that a package of water will never be as green a delivery system as the pipe flowing water into a kitchen sink, but some of the latest containers come pretty darn close, giving a new meaning to the term “lightweighting.” For many companies, reducing the amount of material used in their packaging is a no-brainer, a way to save money and reduce their environmental footprint at the same time. Take, for instance, the NoBottle introduced recently by Sidel for the water category. This PET bottle is so light that it almost has the appearance that the liquid inside just floats in thin air. Handle the bottle and you get a similar effect of weightlessness. Sidel says the bottle took a year to develop and weighs just 9.9 grams for a 500 ml bottle, a reduction of the average weight for a bottle that size of 25 to 40 percent. (The NoBottle was honored as the top innovation at the Global Bottled Water Congress held in Mexico City, Mexico in September.) The leading beverage companies have been putting their efforts into lightweighting bottles for years, and the results are really beginning to show for their efforts. Another impressive bottle being rolled out in the US comes from Nestlé Waters North America. It started rolling out to Nestlé Water customers in November 2006, first with the Ozarka brand. Nestlé is now converting the rest of its bottled water brands to the Eco-Shape. The company anticipates that its new Eco-Shape bottle will reduce its use of PET resin by 65 million pounds in 2008. On the beer front, Bob Darnell, Anheuser-Busch’s senior director, packaging technology, says his company spent decades in an ongoing effort to lightweight its containers.
