10 Reasons to visit drinktec 2009 - (Page 9) See ‘Green’ Solutions at drinktec Energy and water conservation is a growing challenge across the beverage world and drinktec 2009 will be the global showcase for the latest eco-friendly trends and solutions. The subjects of energy generation, energy saving and water preparation will be a recurring theme in nearly all the exhibition halls. The main focus, however, will be in Hall A3. Also, the theme of resource management will be reflected in the program of the two forums in Halls A2 and B1. collectors common in domestic use. They also deliver process water at 140°C – that´s also almost twice as high as that delivered by conventional systems. The water heated by solar energy is stored in an insulated tank and integrated in the process water circuits via modular cascades. The hottest water is first sent to the stage with the highest thermal requirements; from here it is then fed to other high- and low-temperature applications. This cascade arrangement can in theory be duplicated as often as required. The concept offers great flexibility for a wide range of systems, large and small. Solar energy no longer just a vision Solar energy to generate heat for use in industrial processes is no longer a vision of the future. A private German brewery, for example (in cooperation with a major drinktec exhibitor), is currently developing a system which uses heat from a solar panel measuring 1,000 square meters, later to be extended to 3,000 square meters. The aim is to replace 60 percent of the heating oil currently used to generate heat with heat gained from solar energy. As in all initiatives to exploit renewable energy for process heat, the foundation of this solar concept is to utilize the primary energy as efficiently as possible. In recent years improved systems and machinery, such as will be on display at drinktec 2009, have created the required system efficiency in many areas of production. For example, the most energy-intensive part of brewing beer, the wort-boiling stage, today uses up to 70 percent less energy than in the past. The modern collectors used in solar thermal systems also will be on display at drinktec 2009. High-performance CPC vacuum tube collectors, for example, collect roughly twice as much solar energy as traditional flat Renewable energy sources offer potential Another brewery is taking a different approach in exploiting solar energy for its process heat requirements. Solar energy is not just about collectors on the roof: biomass, too, is the sun´s energy stored for many years. A central component in this solution is to use a heating system based on woodchips; wood thus replaces the oil-fuelled heat-generation systems both for the factory and for the offices.
