Fawwaz T. Ulaby

Yoon-Woo Lee

For contributions to undergraduate and graduate
engineering education through innovative textbooks,
dedicated mentoring of students, and inspirational teaching

For pioneering the development of the memory chip and
LCD industries in Korea

Known for his pioneering research on microwave remote sensing
radar technology, Fawwaz T. Ulaby has also established himself
as an inspiring educator and mentor who has set new trends in
teaching. Dr. Ulaby began teaching at the University of Kansas in
1968. He moved to the University of Michigan in 1984, where he
developed several new courses. There he incorporated interactive audio and video tools to better demonstrate the principles
of electromagnetic waves. He re-invented laboratory experiments, wrote new manuals, and developed comprehensive but
accessible textbooks. Dr. Ulaby draws upon personal experiences to teach with passion, purpose, and respect and challenges
his students to ask the difficult questions in pursuing what is
best for society. His classic undergraduate textbook
Fundamentals of Applied Electromagnetics (Prentice Hall) takes
an approach directed at teaching students who would never
otherwise pursue a career in electromagnetics, providing simple
and easy-to-follow explanations. He creates enthusiasm by connecting the material to real-world applications by incorporating
"technology briefs." He also included interactive software for
simulating electromagnetic fields and waves in 3D to better understand their behavior compared to 2D models. The book has
been adopted by over 179 universities in the United States plus
other institutions around the world. Dr. Ulaby's graduate-level
textbook Microwave Remote Sensing: Active and Passive
(Addison-Wesley) has served as the gold standard for over 25
years. The book has been used as a primary or reference text in
practically every microwave remote sensing course taught
around the world.

Yoon-Woo Lee's vision and leadership established Korea as a
global leader in producing semiconductor memory chips and
liquid-crystal-display (LCD) technologies and helped build
Samsung Electronics into the world's largest electronics
company. At a time when Korea had no established semiconductor industry, Mr. Lee helped launch Samsung's semiconductor
business as a young engineer during the early 1970s. In markets
dominated by the United States and Japan, within 20 years Mr.
Lee established Samsung as one of the major suppliers of semiconductor technology for memory and display applications,
placing Korea on the semiconductor map in the process. Under
Mr. Lee's leadership, during the 1990s Samsung emerged as a
leader in dynamic random access memory (DRAM) and static
RAM (SRAM) for the computer industry. By 2002, Mr. Lee drove
Samsung's introduction of flash memory into the marketplace,
enabling the memory cards and USB drives that have revolutionized how we store information. Through these accomplishments,
Samsung became the No. 2 semiconductor manufacturer in the
world. Mr. Lee also personally directed Samsung's entry into the
thin-film transistor LCD market in 1995. Within four years,
Samsung captured the notebook computer monitor market. By
2002, Mr. Lee led Samsung to the top of the flat-panel display
market dominated by Japanese manufacturers, providing LCD
technology for notebooks, desktop monitors, and televisions.
Mr. Lee has also contributed to 4G wireless advancements and
next-generation memory chips including three-dimensional
semiconductor memory.

An IEEE Life Fellow and member of the National Academy of
Engineering, Dr. Ulaby is currently the Emmet Leith Distinguished
University Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer
Science at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Mr. Lee joined Samsung Electronics in 1968 and has held
positions including vice chairman, chief executive officer, chief
technology officer, and head of the Samsung Advanced Institute
of Technology. Mr. Lee is currently an executive advisor with
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Seoul, Korea.

Scope: For a career of outstanding contributions to education in
the fields of interest of IEEE

Scope: For exceptional contributions to the microelectronics
industry
