2013 IEEE TECHNICAL FIELD AWARDS

IEEE Masaru Ibuka Consumer Electronics Award
Sponsored by Sony Corporation

Martin Dietz, Kristofer Kjörling,
and Lars Liljeryd
For pioneering innovations in digital audio coding,
technology leadership, and contributions to the development
of High-Efficiency AAC (HE-AAC)

Leaders of key audio coding technology, Martin Dietz, Kristofer
Kjörling,  and  Lars  Liljeryd  helped  set  the  standard  for  highquality audio compression employed in today's mobile and
digital media devices. They developed the concept of spectral
band replication for more efficient and natural-sounding perceptual audio coding. Mr. Liljeryd provided the vision of using
bandwidth replication to improve existing coding methods, Mr.
Kjörling led the research that turned the vision into working
prototypes, and Mr. Dietz provided the knowledge and industry connections to bring the technology to market. The trio's
groundbreaking work evolved into the High-Efficiency Advanced Audio Coding method, standardized in 2004, which is

a key component of today's cell phones, mobile media devices,
digital radios, televisions, and personal computers. Its efficiency
has enabled lower-bitrate audio streaming for wireless applications, reducing storage needs and lowering transmission and
streaming costs.
Mr. Dietz is chief executive officer with Innosupport AG,
Nuremberg, Germany.
Mr. Kjörling is a principal member of the technical staff with
Dolby Laboratories, Stockholm, Sweden.
Mr. Liljeryd is an IEEE Member and a principal member of the
technical staff and senior research advisor with Dolby Laboratories, Stockholm, Sweden.

IEEE Internet Award

IEEE Reynold B. Johnson Information Storage
Systems Award

Sponsored by Nokia Corporation

Sponsored by Hitachi Data Systems

David Mills

Michael L. Kazar

For significant leadership and sustained
contributions in the research, development, standardization, and deployment
of quality time synchronization capabilities for the Internet

For developments in networked global
file systems and clustered data storage
that shaped commercial networked
file access and the emergence of cloud
storage

Considered the father of Internet time services, David Mills' development of the Network Time Protocol (NTP) in 1981 for clock
synchronization of computer systems provided a critical component
of the Internet's infrastructure. Without NTP, applications such as
the timing of stock market orders, video streaming, aviation traffic control, and real-time teleconferencing over the Internet would
not be possible. NTP has been ported to all commercial operating
systems, runs on the global Internet, and is used is numerous specialized networks. Dr. Mills has worked to improve the accuracy,
performance, and security of NTP. He has developed methods of
protecting message exchanges from "man in the middle" and spoofing attacks where computers or users falsify identification data.
Dr. Mills is a Fellow of both the IEEE and Association for
Computing Machinery and is a member of the U.S. National
Academy of Engineering. He is a Professor Emeritus with the
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University
of Delaware, Newark.

With ideas considered ahead of their time over 20 years ago, Michael L. Kazar has had a lasting influence on network file system
architectures. Dr. Kazar was a co-creator of the Andrew File System (AFS), developed in 1988, which has impacted subsequent
file system and data storage technology. AFS used a set of trusted
servers to present a homogeneous, location-transparent file name
space to all client workstations, much like today's cloud storage
technology. At start-up company Spinnaker Networks, Dr. Kazar
led the creation of a clustered storage system called SpinFS that
incorporated many of the ideas of AFS. The system allowed customers to use off-the-shelf storage access protocols without modifying client operating systems. When Spinnaker was acquired
by NetApp in 2004, Dr. Kazar's SpinFS became the basis for the
Ontap/GX product for high-performance/high-capacity storage
systems and a forerunner to cloud storage systems.
Dr.  Kazar  is  chief  technology  officer  at Avere  Systems,  Pittsburgh, Pa.
