Inland Empire Golfer - March 2008 - (Page 32) GOLF TIP Swing Mechanics The Roll of Wrists and Arms in the Down Swing: It’s all about the Plane I n a correct down swing, as the club head approaches impact, it comes from “inside” the target line as it approaches the ball. At the moment of impact, the clubface is aimed slightly open to the target, and at “separation” the clubface is aimed directly at the target. After impact, the club head continues on a path inside the target line again (as demonstrated by our instructor, Cary Schoen, figures 1-5). In actuality, the club is traveling on a plane, In a correct down swing, as the club head approaches impact, it comes from “inside” the target line as it approaches the ball which is inclined with the ball at its base and leaning approximately toward your shoulders; thus it is an “inclined” or “angled” plane. The club head travels along this angled plane and is pointed at the target line, but touches the target line only briefly, during the impact interval. To accomplish this, in the back swing, the right arm guides the club up the plane. The left arm swings in a circular motion, also guided by the right arm as it lifts the club. The left arm and wrist rotate until the top of the back swing (figures 1 & 2). As the down swing begins, the left arm rotates back as the club heads back down the plane (figure 3). At the point of impact, the left arm has rotated so that the back of the left wrist is aimed just right of the target (figure 4). After impact the left arm continues its rotation, swinging the club back up the plane until the finish (figures 5). It’s important to understand that this article is a fact of geometry that pertains to a properly executed golf swing. To see how this relates to your golf swing requires analysis of your swing by you and a teaching professional with the aid of a sophisticated digital video system. Replacing your current swing procedure will take some time and effort, but it will be a major step in making you a better player. IEG Bill Seltzer is President of Temecula Valley Golf School.
