Inland Empire Golfer - March 2008 - (Page 37) COURSE REVIEW Quail Ranch Golf Course Unmatched Vistas, Challenging, and Reasonably priced Q uail Ranch golf course is rated a must play course in the Inland Empire, as much for its challenging layout as for its panoramic vistas off in the distance. Quail Ranch is reasonably priced and offers great amenities: a full grass driving range, large putting green and chipping area. Plus it offers a full service restaurant with a range of lunch menus. Quail Ranch is nestled in the foothills of the San Jacinto Mountains. with Palm trees and desert foliage adding to the scenic beauty of the course. A Majestic view of the valley that serves as a basin for the San jacinto and jagged Lakeview Mountains provides a picturesque backdrop from many holes. The course has gone through renovation over the last year. Bunkers have been rebuilt, greens have been resurfaced and fairway turf has been improved. The course features some very large and challenging greens that will test the best putters. But the most challenging part of this course is its hilly and sloping lies that will require cautious shots, in some cases to blind greens. We agree that this is one course you should check out if you enjoy a golf challenge. And, by the way, it is always cooler than the desert, making it a great alternative to Palm Springs in the summer. The course is fairly flat and walkable, but at 6797 yards from the blue tees, it is moderately long. Its slope rating of 120 from the blues is deceiving. Unless you average 250 yards or better off the tee, you should consider playing from the white tees, otherwise you will eat up plenty of strokes trying to reach the greens in regulation. The course features tough dogleg fairways, several lakes and large mature trees that add to the challenge. I consider General Old to be one of the most fun courses to play because, although long and challenging, it is wide and forgiving. O riginally a military course, General Old golf course is one of our vintage golf courses developed back in the Strategic Air Command days of the 1950's. In 1996 it was opened to the public, and quickly became a favorite golf venue for Inland Empire golfers. General Old is well maintained and features full practice ameni- The best part of this course is its rates. Its weekday fees are $25 to walk and $37 to ride, which is among the lowest in the Inland Empire. Of course, they offer senior, twilight, and military discounts. And, if you happen to catch a bite at its lunch grill, you can enjoy a great sandwich, or hamburger, with drink for under $5. This is an all-around great deal.
