Executive Housekeeping Today - January 2008 - (Page 9) bulbs, purchasing energy-efficient equipment, turning up or down the thermostats, using fewer plastic bags and bottles, etc. During the coming year, let’s get turned on to energy savings by turning off energy wasters and purchasing energy-effective equipment. • Staffing issues: These topics cross a whole array of issues from the ability to hire and retain qualified employees to concerns about the ability to pay such employees a practical wage. According to the King County Long-Term Care Ombudsman in the state of Washington, low wages and higher costs create a continuing problem for care providers. Lack of resources was one of the critical factors that CHEMA identified in their study as a threat to future success. In their survey, over 43% of respondents indicate their concerns about a lack of resources, which could have a direct impact on the quality and quantity of staffing available. Ironically, the leading issue identified by respondents as a threat to future success was resistance to change, which is also part of the staffing and training equation. Roger Young, assistant superintendent for finance and facilities at Manchester Essex Regional School District in Massachusetts, suggests that involving people in the process of solving problems may break down the resistance to change. Young states, “It’s my belief that people don’t mind doing things differently if they have a clear idea of where you’re going, why you’re doing it, how they fit in, and if they have an opportunity to contribute to your thinking.” As we proceed into 2008, we need to clearly identify staffing issues and concerns and to map out a plan for success in this area. • Sustainability issues: Facilities departments in organizations and institutions are constantly being asked to concentrate on this area that covers a plethora of topics. As APPA’s “2007 Thought Leaders Series” indicates, “Facilities departments face the greatest pressure within the institution to increase sustainable policies and practices.” As we move into 2008, facilities and housekeeping managers should partner together, according to the facilities professionals that participated in the “Thought Leader Series,” by starting to “assess the institution and department’s current level of sustainability Make a business case for sustainable practices.” For an organization or institution to effectively implement such programs it will be critical to, “Form partnerships across the institution.” The year 2008 is going to be exciting and challenging. It is an opportunity for new beginnings and the implementation of innovative programs to solve ongoing challenges by marshalling our resources. James Reny, business manager and facilities director for the Waterville Public Schools in Maine, indicates that getting our staffs involved in resolving challenges and issues is vital. Reny states, “It’s important to involve them (the staff) in that process, get buy-in from the staff. They should be involved at the ground level ” As we enter 2008, one could argue that it will be the year of managing resources through resourceful managers. The input and involvement of our staff is critical to our joint success. I.E.H.A. Board of Directors President—J. Darrel Hicks, R.E.H. (2-year term) ❖ St. Luke’s Hospital ❖ 232 S.
